If you and your child have trouble working on homework, read on for tips on developing a good homework routine that works for your family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why homework challenges arise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you and your child have problems with their homework, it may be helpful to take a step back and assess the situation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you and your child wait until the last minute to do your homework?<\/li>\n<li>Is it difficult for your child to understand homework?<\/li>\n<li>Is your child bored and more interested in doing something different?<\/li>\n<li>Is there an underlying learning disability that needs to be addressed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Your help is needed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your child&#39;s school uses a homework package system that is sent home weekly, take a few minutes to review the assignments and schedule them to be completed. Doing something every day is trying to do everything at the last minute. This is a life skill that we all have to learn. Children live in the moment and have only a vague idea of \u200b\u200bthe time, so planning ahead requires some effort.<\/p>\n<p>If your child is zealously zooming in on homework, Monday night may be the day you do it. If your child needs to divide up their homework, choose one or two worksheets per night so your child can take the time to do his \/ her homework.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#39;t assume that your little child will come home from school automatically, grab the homework package, and start working on homework right away. In fact, they have probably spent much of the day sitting and focusing on learning. Your brain and body need a break. Active, physical play, if possible outdoors, rejuvenates and refreshes them and gives them the opportunity to concentrate on homework in due course.<\/p>\n<p>During elementary school years (possibly even beyond), you may need to help your child remember to do their homework. The &quot;when&quot; and the &quot;where&quot; vary depending on what is best suited to your unique child and family situation. Consider speaking to your child and encouraging them to develop an appropriate after-school routine for them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your child comes home from school, after-school care, or from sports, let them relax first.<\/li>\n<li>Offer an afternoon snack and let your child tell you about his day. You can also use this time to ask your child what they need to do for their homework tonight. The special one-on-one conversation when you reconnect at the end of the day of work and school strengthens the resilience of your relationship, and a little bit of fun together helps you to feel close. This is a long way to build up a buffer for homework stress later.<\/li>\n<li>Set a time to work on homework. An idea might be after a snack, but before you are allowed to screen time or play time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Set up a homework room<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just as adults need an organized work area, children can also benefit from a certain place &#8211; free of clutter, sibling toys, snack packaging, etc. &#8211; to sit down at work. Your child might even enjoy having an \u201coffice\u201d, just like mom or dad.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#39;t have to be anything special &#8211; just a small table or desk with a chair where your child can sit or stand comfortably. Here are some ideas for work areas that you should consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If possible, have your child do their homework in a quiet place, away from distractions like the TV or a sibling playing.<\/li>\n<li>Create folders for every day of the week and organize your homework in them. This way, if it\u2019s Monday, your child can easily go to the Monday folder and work on these tasks.<\/li>\n<li>Consider having a folder or shopping cart so your child can see what they have achieved!<\/li>\n<li>Fill a special cup with pens, markers, scissors and a ruler and place it in your child&#39;s homework room.<\/li>\n<li>Ask your child if they want to decorate their homework room. You can add pictures of family members, pets and friends.<\/li>\n<li>If you feel that there is no space in your living room for a permanent homework space, you should purchase a tool box or basket holder for homework and accessories. You can clear it out of the way and retrieve it for homework. Sitting at the kitchen table or at the counter works well for most children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Motivate and encourage, but don&#39;t work for them<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#39;s a great idea to sit at work with your child, but not do their homework for them. Keep your comments positive. Say things like, &quot;What do you think?&quot; and &quot;I know you can.&quot; Encourage your child to solve homework problems themselves instead of answering them immediately. You can make suggestions and give instructions, but it is up to your child to carry out the learning. Reading and following instructions for yourself is a skill to work towards. This will help develop their motivation from within, rather than relying on others to guide them.<\/p>\n<p>Working after school and after work helps your child feel safe. They know what to expect and what&#39;s next. There are no surprises and they know that you are in their corner. If you are available to your child for homework, it helps them feel important and strengthen their self-esteem. Doing homework can be a small thing, but it&#39;s an opportunity to help your child understand your family values.
