The skip counting game combines skip counting with a creative and imaginative rocket-building activity. The free skip counting printable resource includes rocket templates, numbered rocket parts, and instructions. Children in kindergartners, grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3 will cut out the numbered rocket parts and paste them in the correct order to build a complete rocket.

Skip Counting Activities

To prepare:

• A4 paper
• Unifix cubes for counting practice (optional)
• Printer
• Laminator
• Scissors
• Glue

Print as many card templates as you need for the number of students in your class. These cards can be laminated for durability but it is not necessary. You can differentiate these strips and use numbers up to 6 with some of your learners depending on their level.

Practice skip counting

Prepare and cut up the skip counting cards, you can place these in a mini tub along with unifix cubes or just glue and scirros, so the kids can pretend they are skip counting and building their rockets There are also black and white options. Be sure to have enough cubes and strips if you’re using cubes.

The students will then choose a card to start counting by, then begin to skip count by that number (2’s or 3’s).

They can also use unifix cubes to assist them as they learn to skip count by 2 and 3. Watch the students as they do this – have them even roll play dough to create the skip counting numbers. Some kids will begin building their unifix cubes right away– that’s ok too. Just be sure they are doing this correctly. Have the kids clip and write the missing number with a dry erase marker.

These tasks can easily be differentiated with your learners. Have the kids work on counting by 2s or 3s.

Instructions:

1. Start by printing out the rocket templates and numbered rocket parts. You can find a variety of free printable resources online or create your own.
2. Cut out the numbered rocket parts carefully, ensuring that the numbers stay intact.
3. Lay out the rocket templates and the numbered rocket parts on a flat surface.
4. Explain to the child that they will be skip counting numbers 1 to 6 to build their rockets.
5. Begin skip counting with the number 1 and ask the child to identify the corresponding rocket part with the number 1 on it. For example, the rocket body may have the number 1 printed on it.
6. Have the child paste the rocket part onto the correct position on the rocket template.
7. Continue skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s, repeating the process of identifying and pasting the corresponding numbered rocket parts.
8. Once the child completes skip counting and pastes all the numbered rocket parts in the correct order, they will have a fully assembled rocket for each set.
