When it starts getting colder, trees prepare for winter. They stop making food and slowly close off the tiny tubes that carry water and nutrients to the leaves. As a result, the leaves start to lose their green color. But wait, there’s a hidden superhero in the leaves called chlorophyll! Chlorophyll is what makes leaves green and helps trees make food. As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, chlorophyll slowly starts to break down and disappear, revealing the other colors hidden inside the leaves. These other colors, like red, yellow, and orange, have been in the leaves all along, just hidden behind the green. Isn’t that cool?

So, to sum it up: leaves change colors in the fall because trees are getting ready for winter and the green chlorophyll breaks down, allowing the other beautiful colors to shine through. Enjoy the magical autumn colors all around you!
