Ending blends

Final mixes. There are so many of them and it was quite a struggle for my first grade students to master. So I decided to buckle up and spend a few weeks working through these blends and getting where they are easy.

Whether you're a parent, teacher, or homeschooler, you'll love these simple final mix worksheets that focus on “L mixes”. This is just one way we work on it. All you have to do is read and puncture. Use them for summer learning, additional exercises, supplements, or in a literacy center in your classroom.

What is a final mix?

As a reminder, there are two types of mix ends for words: final mixes and digraphs. A Final mix is two adjacent consonants, each producing its own sound; A digraph has two letters that do justice one Sound.

  • END MIX - An example of a final mix is the word "sink". You make a sound for both end letters nk. Say it out loud slowly and pay attention to both sounds. Make sense?
  • DIGRAPH - An example of a digraph would be the word "truck". The ck makes a single tone / k /

I have found that one of my little learners reads much better when we have spent time spelling the words first. And this is so important with these tricky "l-mixtures". Our little ones need to hear the word, repeat the word as they sound it out, and find the letters that make these sounds.

Words you want to practice are:

  • LD Ending Blends: fold, old, told, cold, bald
  • LT Ending Blends: melt, quilt, belt, bolt, salt,
  • LF Ending Blends: Golf, Wolf, Regal, Elf, Selbst
  • LK Ending Blends: Speak, Egg Yolk, Chalk, Milk, Walking
  • LP Ending Blends: Help, swallow

When you phrased these funny words, you probably noticed that you heard all the sounds at "a" and "l" together. And that the o didn't make a short o-sound when it was with the l.

Knowing that our children had to practice reading these different sounds, I placed all the words with "a" on one side and the words with "o" on another side. This would allow them to focus on these words in isolation and familiarize themselves with the sound that the “a” and “o” produce in these words.

The rest of the vowels thankfully make the short vowel sound so that they mix through the rest of the pages. All your little ones have to do is read the word and choose the right picture.
