Apple Pie Pockets Recipe for Children to Make

These delicious apple pie pockets are filled with juicy apples, cinnamon, and sugar and then wrapped in a pie crust. A fun fall recipe the kids can make with apples.

One of my parenting goals is to help my kids learn to cook in our kitchen. This apple pie pocket recipe is simple enough the kids will be able to do nearly all of it themselves. This builds such confidence in themselves and provides them with a good foundation for following recipes in their future.

Plus it’s a delicious fall treat once it’s baked. Here’s how to make these apple pie pockets.

One thing when you’re cooking with younger kids is to discuss the kitchen utensils you’re using and how to use them safely. Sometimes for early learners, it’s fun to label them as well.

Here’s an example of the kitchen labels we use.

Kitchen Utensils Needed

Ingredients

  • apple (2)
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 TB flour 
  • pre-made pie dough or use this pie crust recipe
  • 1/3 cup sugar

Directions for Apple Pie Pockets

Preheat oven to 400 degrees 

  1. Have your child use the apple cutter to cut the two apples into slices.  
  2. Use the butter knife to cut each slice into smaller pieces  
  3. Add apples to the bowl and add 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 Tablespoon flour, and then mix together
  4. Layout premade pie dough onto a flat surface and cut out 4-inch circles using a butter knife and bowl for a template.  
  5. Place a small amount of spiced apples into one half of the dough circle and then fold the dough in half.  
  6. Using a fork seal the edges of the pie dough closed leaving a fork pattern. 
  7. Bake apple pie pocket for 15 minutes at 400 degrees until golden brown.

Tips for making apple pie pockets filling with kids

YOUNGER CHILDREN: Start with precut apples and have them mix in pre-measured ingredients. 

OLDER CHILDREN: Fun for all ages, see if they want to test our other fruit ingredients or spices to add flavor as they become a future chef.
